About Us

Who we are

My name is Wes Hornback, and I am honored to have the opportunity to bring Sage City Market to Monticello, Illinois alongside my wife, Sara.

We moved to Monticello in November 2016. I am a University of Illinois graduate with a B.S. in Animal Science and M.S. in Ruminant (Cattle) Nutrition. After graduating, I spent nearly a decade in the animal feed industry supporting beef cattle producers across the Midwest and East Coast. I worked with producers on a range of management practices, from grazing habits to diet formulation to manure management.

Sara graduated from Michigan State University with a B.S. in Animal Science and earned her MBA from Central Michigan University. Post-college, she has held roles as the General Manager of a feed and pet supply store, pricing and formulations specialist for an animal nutrition company, and supported training programs for employees of the pork industry.

During our careers, we have worked with numerous farmers and consumers. We felt the divide between the two groups was growing and the industry didn’t seem to have a solution. This led us to take matters into our own hands and start Sunset Acres in 2019. We expanded our existing cattle herd, partnered with a family friend who raises pigs, and started selling direct to our community. Thanks to the overwhelming support we received, we decided to take the leap and expand our offering to provide even more local products!

With the expanded offering, we decided to expand our name to Sage City Market! With our new store, we can provide both fresh and frozen, locally raised beef, pork, chicken, and lamb. We will also be stocking other local food items, such as eggs, seasonings, sauces, in-season produce, as well as reheat and eat options for easy meal planning!
